Poem of William HermannsP388
Elsa Brändström
- 2
Why do you drape your Swedish hair of shining gold in a Red Cross veil? "The starving prisoners I shall save where Siberian wolves are on their tail." Has Germany no thanks for you -- you saved two hundred thousand men? "I have compassion with the Jews and leave the swastika breeding den. I'll make for us a home in the land where on the statue of liberty a Jewess wrote: You hated outcasts come to our shore; here you are free." Was ever there in history a girl so simple, quiet and brave! Oh Elsa, your blue eyes told me: "On angel-wings I come to save." William Hermanns [P388] Note: P388. ; Stockholm; 1983-06-05; another poem P387 on Elsa Brändström was composed four days earlier which was translated into German G387; Einstein and the Poet - In Search of the Cosmic Man by William Hermanns (Branden, 1983)is dedicated to Elsa Brändström. |
