To My Neighbor

I lift you higher,
lift you out
of your body cells
stuffed with anxiety
of your past -
an evil load that smells.

I'll fill each cell
with love and joy
that makes the
angels dance.
You'll glide through earthly
filth and stench -
a spiritual trance.

From your youth filled eyes,
your hands
and feet,
a holy peace shall flow,
so you and I
be filled with grace -
let us be still
and know.

Introduction

William Hermanns mother tongue is German, in which he wrote German poetry (Gedichte), essays, radio educational plays and stage plays. He also wrote his first drafts of his memoirs of his war and prisoner of war experience, as well as his first conversation with Albert Einstein in 1930. After fleeing the Nazi regime in Germany in 1934, he began writing in English, as well in German. He so mastered the English language that he translated the Christian Science Hymnal from English into German after he was granted a visa to the United States in 1937.
