Introduction to the Poetry of William HermannsWilliam Hermanns identified himself first as a Poet. He attributes his talent to his mother who used to read him poetry, including her own, as a little boy. When you read his memoirs about his battle experience as a volunteer of the Kaiser, published under the title The Holocaust - from a Survivor of Verdun, you will encounter a very sensitive young man discovering his conscience and a higher authority to obey than that taught him in German schools. His muse is that higher authority. He wrote German poetry (Gedichte) and after fleeing Germany into exile, some of which was spent in France, England and in South Africa before being granted a visa to enter the United States, he wrote also in English, having mastered that language and French in his early schooling.
