To My Neighbor

I lift you higher,
lift you out
of your body cells
stuffed with anxiety
of your past -
an evil load that smells.

I'll fill each cell
with love and joy
that makes the
angels dance.
You'll glide through earthly
filth and stench -
a spiritual trance.

From your youth filled eyes,
your hands
and feet,
a holy peace shall flow,
so you and I
be filled with grace -
let us be still
and know.

Mabel Farewell

William Hermanns composed this as a booklet, In Memoriam to Mabel Stonehill, a close friend since he moved to San Jose, California to begin teaching at San Jose State College in 1946. It includes the poem Mabel Farewell (P197). Mabel Stonehill was a Christian Science Practitioner who was successful in her healing practice. William Hermanns held Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, in high esteem, and credited the faith of a Christian Science Practitioner in London with lifting him out of a suicidal depression on his exile journey from Hitler's Germany. Though Mabel and William never married, they live within walking distance and shared many stories with each other and cared for one another and for the students of Professor Hermanns. Mabel died in August 1970. A month later he would meet a student who helped him prepare this booklet, who eventually would be adopted as his son and be named as Trustee of this endeavor of emphasizing the primary role of conscience in human decision making. - Kenneth Norton.
